Local Attractions
Five minutes away: the local shop, pub, and golf course — genuinely on the doorstep.
Ōpunake (15 minutes): one of the safest swimming beaches in the country, good for families, plus the 7km Ōpunake Loop Trail around the lake and beach, and fish and chips worth the drive.
Cape Egmont Lighthouse (20–25 minutes): New Zealand's westernmost lighthouse, built in 1881 — a striking coastal photo stop with the mountain behind it. There's also a smaller replica lighthouse and museum further along the coast at Warea.
Surf Highway 45: the property sits right on it. More than a dozen world-class surf breaks along this stretch of coast, so it's an easy sell for anyone who surfs, and a scenic drive even for those who don't.
Egmont National Park / Taranaki Maunga (30–45 minutes): walking tracks for every fitness level, from short nature walks to the multi-day Pouākai Circuit. The Stratford Mountain Club runs a small ski field, Manganui, in winter.
New Plymouth (30 minutes): the Coastal Walkway along the waterfront, the Len Lye Centre for art, and Pukekura Park with its gardens and children's zoo.
Parihaka (nearby): the historic site of New Zealand's non-violent resistance movement, led by Te Whiti-o-Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi — a significant place in the region's story, worth a mention for guests interested in local history.
Golf, fishing, and gardens: the region has more golf courses within an hour's drive than most visitors expect, plus well-known gardens such as Tūpare and Pukeiti, and the Taranaki Garden Festival each spring.
